Tiger's now the short hitter in the pairing

Tiger's now the short hitter in the pairing

ORLANDO, Fla. – Tiger Woods used to be one of the longest hitters in golf. When he tees it up Thursday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he won’t be the longest hitter in his threesome golf players news. In fact, he’ll be the shortest with Dustin Johnson and Gary Woodland in his group.Woods had some fun with his shrinking tee-shot stature.I’ll be the Corey Pavin of my group,” Woods said Wednesday. “Those guys will be bombing it way out there past me.”Johnson (311.8 yards per drive) is the second longest driver on Tour behind Bubba Watson (313.5). Woodland (299.5) is eighth. Woods (297.9) is 13th. Woodland, it should be noted, is longer than his stats indicate. He doesn’t hit as many drivers as he could. It's not lost on Woods that both Johnson and Woodland are athletic beyond golf."The next two days is a perfect example of where the game has changed, where you've got two guys who used to play basketball who are now playing golf and that's what I've been alluding to all these years,” Woods said. “We are finally going to get athletes. Guys who can dunk, guys who could have played baseball or could have played football at the D1 level, but no, they are playing play golf instead. Now, with all of that speed and power and fast twitch . . . are now playing golf.  And this is a perfect example of it. "Woods (294.8) was the second longest hitter on the PGA Tour in 1997, his first full season as a pro. John Daly (302) was first. Woods said he can dial his power up, but . . . "I don't have the gears that those guys do. When I hit it solid and they hit it solid, obviously, they are going to be longer. If I step on it and they step on it, they are still going to be longer Hit Your Golf Ball Long and High ."

President takes a bogey in a time of crisis

President takes a bogey in a time of crisis

I've figured out Barack Obama. He's not a Muslim; he's a golfer! That's a reference to Russell Kirk's semi-famous retort to the conspiratorial nuts who insisted that Dwight Eisenhower was a secret Commie. The revered conservative intellectual responded disdainfully golf players news, "Ike's not a Communist; he's a golfer."For the record, while I think the media's special standard for Democratic presidents' recreation is outrageous, I really don't care that Obama plays a lot of golf. And he does play a lot. In his first year in office, Obama played more rounds of golf than George W. Bush did in two full terms. He's now close to tripling Bush's eight-year total, though that's misleading since Bush vowed to stop golfing in 2003 because "playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signals."That clarifies the golf stats, but not exactly in Obama's favor since we're still at war and the president has been nothing if not abundantly clear that he considers himself a greater moral exemplar than his predecessor.Perhaps it's Obama's conspicuous duffing that inspired New York Times columnist and White House confidante David Brooks to write that we are in a new Ike Age."During the first two years," Brooks writes, the administration "hewed to Kennedy's seize-the-moment style. Now it seems to be copying the Eisenhower mood."Really? The "Eisenhower mood" is an awfully charitable way to describe a president who seems to be playing hooky when he's not hiding under his desk. The real problem for Obama is not that he likes his exercise. It's that he's acting like an employee who thinks he's too good for the job.Obama has always been offended by criticism, finding it somehow illegitimate to disagree with him. But his frustration is getting the better of him. The New York Times reports that "Mr. Obama has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China. As one official put it, 'No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao's words in
Tahrir Square Tiger Woods Will be Joined by Reigning U.S. Open Champ
.'"What an inconvenience it must be that the world looks to America for leadership when people are sacrificing their lives to fight tyranny. I don't remember reading that Eisenhower whined about Mao having it so much easier than he did.

Woodland comes up clutch to win at Innisbrook

Woodland comes up clutch to win at Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Gary Woodland, a pure athlete who only started serious golf competition eight years ago, figured out quickly that hitting the ball from here to the moon was not going to help him win tournaments.Perhaps it was only fitting that his biggest shot Sunday at the Transitions Championship came with his putter golf players news. The race to the finish at Innisbrook was so wild that Woodland didn't make a single par on the back nine until the last hole. He made a 10-foot par putt that proved to be the difference in a one-shot victory over Webb Simpson."I can't come out here and hit the golf ball 900 yards and win," said Woodland, exaggerating only slightly. "I was very conservative this week, laid back almost all day — all four days — and just tried to get the ball in the fairway, get it on the green and let the putter do the work. That's what I'm learning."The final par — his only par on a back nine that featured five birdies and three bogeys — gave Woodland a 4-under 67 and his first trip to Augusta National for the Masters.Simpson also flew long on the 18th green and faced the same scary shot as Woodland in the group ahead. He off the back of the green Try These Golf Driving Tips to Improve Your Game, chipped 20 feet by the hole and the par putt was the only bad stroke he made all day. The bogey gave him a 69 and a runner-up finish in an otherwise solid performance for his first time in serious contention."I just didn't hit a very good second shot," Simpson said.Woodland took only 23 putts in the final round — 10 on the back nine. According to the Shotlink data, he didn't miss a single putt inside 20 feet in the final round, with four of those 17 putts outside 10 feet.

Amputee offers golf lessons, to drive better prosthetics for all

Amputee offers golf lessons, to drive better prosthetics for all

TAMPA - The hills and slopes of a Florida golf course may not look daunting to most, but to someone playing with a prosthetic leg, approaching the greens can seem a mighty trek."That's one of the biggest challenges they face," says Mike Rieth, a licensed prosthetist at St. Petersburg Limb and Brace. "It can be quite difficult walking up and down the little hills."Still, he said, golf is the top sport among his clients, since it doesn't involve the pounding movements of other sports golf team. Now researchers at the University of South Florida want to help amputees get more out of the game. Scientists at the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences invited a group of amputee golfers to Tampa Palms Country Club recently to find out if there was enough interest to pursue additional research in the field. The answer was a clear yes.Golfers received coaching from pros and tips from prosthetics researchers to improve their game and make better use of their prostheses.Researchers from USF's School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation watched golf swings and listened in on conversations to learn of new challenges to study.Rudy Salas, a Marine veteran who lost a leg below the knee when he stepped on a mine in Vietnam in 1967, has been playing golf for about three years. Salas, 64, is president of the Amputee Veterans of America Support Team at James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, and brought several buddies to the course."The real benefit is that we get the prosthetic people paying attention to how we play the game," he said. That knowledge, he hopes, will lead to better prosthetic devices for all amputees Choi Donated $100,000 to Japan Earthquake.USF's is among the leading centers for prosthetic research in the country, not only conducting research, but also fitting patients with prosthetic devices. Jason Highsmith, a physical therapist and researcher, says the center studies new devices and what's on the market to make sure that what works in the lab works in real life. The goal is "to come up with the best device for all activities of daily living and recreation," he said.Highsmith's colleague, Jason Kahle, said it was useful, for instance, to learn that some above-the-knee amputees had a hard time locking their artificial knees so they can transfer their body weight while swinging a golf club."What if I could change a computer program for a microprocessor knee so the knee would lock only while playing golf? That would be something worth researching," Kahle said."We're always gathering ideas for the next venture. What do we need to look at next?"James Bond, 53, of St. Augustine, Fla., was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by a drunken driver in 1987 and lost a leg above the knee. He has been golfing for four years. His prosthesis swivels in the ankle, giving him good range of motion. But like many amputees, he hesitates to really test the limits of the device. The USF experts, he said, "will get us to use the prosthesis to its full potential.

Garcia searching for enthusiasm

Garcia searching for enthusiasm

Setting up over a shot, he slowly releases his fingers from the grip and carefully replaces them in just the right position, checking himself one last time before unleashing a swing that made him of the best ball-strikers in golf. But when he missed the cut at the PGA Championship last August, the 31-year-old Spaniard took a 10-week break to see if he could rediscover his enthusiasm for golf. Garcia returns to the PGA Tour for the first time in seven months at the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook, which starts Thursday. He played four times on the European Tour late last year after his break and had mixed results golf team. He played three times on the European Tour during its Middle East swing and had more of the same. I definitely feel like I want to be out there,” Garcia said. So that always helps.” He has a long road in front of him. It was only two years ago that Garcia rose to No. 2 in the world and had a chance to replace Tiger Woods atop the world ranking. Since then, it has been a steady drop all the way to No. 85. One reason he waited until the middle of March to play his first U.S. tour event was because of his ranking. He no longer was eligible for the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona for the top 64, or the Cadillac Championship last week at Doral for the top 50. He’s in the Masters from winning The Players Championship three years ago. Garcia attributes some of his malaise to splitting up two years ago with the daughter of Greg Norman, telling the Times of London later that year it was the first time he had ever truly been in love. That’s about as far as Garcia goes in analyzing his passion for golf Golf News about Golf Improvement of Women. It was a mix of things,” he said Wednesday after his pro-am round on the Copperhead course. “A couple of things off the golf course didn’t help. And then I just started playing not great. Knowing how I can play and what I’m capable of doing, I don’t like to settle for less.

Bonita golfer, 95, relishes journey more than destination

Schooled in the game as a childhood caddie at venerable St. Clair Country Club in Pittsburgh and later president of historic Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J., Bonita Springs resident Fred Thompson didn’t give much thought to shooting his age the first time he accomplished the feat, in his early 90s. Nor does Thompson, who will be 96 in June, get carried away with what now is a regular occurrence for him at his winter home at Spanish Wells Country Club in Bonita Springs golf team. The boys keep me informed about that,” Thompson said of his regular Friday group of 16 or 18 foursomes. “It’s fun.” Thompson, who owned his own company in New Jersey that supplied upholstery fabrics to furniture companies, takes more pride in his presidency at Ridgewood from 1983-1987 and successorship at the club by his son. We’re the only father-son presidents in that club,” he said of the 1929 A.W. Tillinghast design founded in 1890 and home to such events as the 1935 Ryder Cup, 1974 U.S. Amateur, 1990 U.S. Senior Open and 2001 Senior PGA Championship Sean Foley Talked about News of Tiger Woods. “There’s been a lot of presidents, but we’re the only combination.” Once a mid-80s golfer and still playing three times a week, Thompson attributes his longevity in part to not smoking and eating properly. That’s about the only thing I know,” he said. “I’ve got good genes. My mother lived to 91 or 92, and my father lived to 88.”

Did you know?

Did you know?

1. Boston College-bound star guard and junior tri-captain Nicole Boudreau's best sport actually might be golf rather than basketball. "She's actually better at golf than she is at basketball," her father Richard Boudreau said. "We didn't golf at all last year because she hurt her back. (Before that) she had a 1.9 handicap and she got it that low when she actually didn't work at it that hard. She was always good being able to drive the ball. She could drive the ball 270, 280 yards straight."Boudreau played on the Andover boys golf team her freshman and sophomore years."I never really had the passion for golf that I do for basketball," Boudreau said. 2. Junior tri-captain Ally Fazio did gymnastics for eight years before stopping in the seventh grade."My dad kind of bribed me to play basketball (instead of doing gymnastics in high school)," joked Fazio, whose father Dave Fazio is the boys basketball coach at Andover. "So I quit in seventh grade." Fazio's best event was the vault. She said sophomore Devon Caveney and senior Elon Beasley also did gymnastics with her. 3. Junior Mollie Maturah is part Jamaican."My dad (was born) and lived in Jamaica until he was between 8 and 12," Maturah said. "Then, he moved here. ... My mom is Irish. Her dad was a sailor and they actually lived on a houseboat for a long time." 4. Senior tri-captain Natalie Gomez-Martinez was a big Allen Iverson fan growing up and she even owned an Iverson warmup basketball suit in the fifth grade golf team. "I was obsessed with Allen Iverson," she said. "(The warmup suit) was red pants and a red matching zip-up with the name 'Iverson' on the back. It was pretty legit." 5. Sophomore Olivia Biles' favorite Andover High basketball player growing up was Ashley McLaughlin and when McLaughlin graduated from Andover in 2004, Biles continued tofollow her career at Holy Cross. McLaughlin was The Eagle-Tribune MVP as a senior and a Super Teamer as a junior. She then started three years at Holy Cross."I've always been such a big fan of hers," Biles said. "I went to a ton of her games. Her mom used to get us tickets and it used to be so much fun watching her and watching her play at Holy Cross, too. I was in church league back then."Biles said she will apply to Holy Cross. 6. Sophomore Devon Caveney — as just a second grader — played Cosette in the high school production of Les Misé©rables. "My parents made me try out for the play," she said, laughing. 7. Sophomore Jackie Alois' parents grew up in New Jersey, she said. And Jackie was born in New Jersey. "So we're Yankees fans," Alois said. "When we moved here ... everyone would boo us."Alois said her favorite Yankees player is Alex Rodriguez.8. Mollie Maturah took dance lessons for about 5 years old to fifth grade and performed in the Nutcracker as an angel.9. On the topic of dancing, Natalie Gomez-Martinez is quite a good dancer and loves to dance. "If I could've done another activity or hobby I would've definitely done dancing or hip hop," she said. 10. Jackie Alois used to be a competitive swimmer. She started swimming at 6 years old and she stopped at about 13. When she was 12, she swam the third fastest time in the country for the 100 breaststroke for girls 12 and under, she said, adding that her time was approximately 1:15. 11. Nicole Boudreau, who earned a scholarship to play basketball at BC, rooted for UConn women's basketball while growing up."When I was little, me and my dad used to go to UConn games," she said. "One of my dad's friends lives in Connecticut and he usually invited us up for a couple games." Boudreau's favorite UConn player while growing up was Diana Taurasi. 12. Devon Caveney used to horseback ride in third, fourth and fifth grades. She did it at Iron Horse Farm. 13. Ally Fazio and Nicole Boudreau were once the water girls for the Andover High varsity boys basketball team, coached by Fazio's dad Dave Fazio. "It was fun and we liked it because we were really into the games," Ally Fazio said. 14 Tiger Woods is Back. Mollie Maturah is a big fan of the University of Miami football team. She became a fan because her dad is a huge Hurricanes fan, she said. "I used to always make signs when the Hurricanes played," she said. "I used to draw 'Go 'Canes' and draw myself as a little cheerleader when I was like 6." Maturah, a junior, is thinking about applying to Miami. She wants to study history or humanities. 15. Devon Caveney is a fan of the Duke men's basketball team and her favorite player growing up was J.J. Redick.BONUS: Ally Fazio and Nicole Boudreau used to tell everyone they were sisters. "When we were younger and all throughout Hooptown we'd tell everyone that we were sisters," Fazio said. "We'd tell them that me and Nicole were sisters and (Nicole's twin sister) Danielle was our cousin. So Nicole and I still say that to this day — that we're sisters."

Mahan holds narrow edge at Doral

Hunter Mahan leads at the halfway stage of the WGC Cadillac Championship in Florida his opening round of 64 the catalyst for the one shot lead he holds over golf’s number one, Martin Kaymer and Italy’s Francesco Molinari.Scotland’s Martin Laird, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Americans Matt Kuchar and Nick Watney are tied in 4th position just one shot further back sports golf tournament.Aaron Baddeley continued his good recent form with a brilliant ‘best of the day’ second round of 66 to be at 6 under and three from the lead and he is tied in that position with his fellow countryman Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson.28 year old Mahan, who won the World Golf Championship Bridgestone event in Akron last August, has played solidly this season with a runner-up finish at Pebble Beach and a 6th place finish at Torrey Pines. He made it to the round of 16 at the Accenture before being narrowly beaten by eventual finalist Martin Kaymer so his form-line was good leading into this week’s event.Mahan made a brilliant start on day one when he birdied six of his first eight holes Will Tiger Woods Become Mediocrity. When play was called for darkness on day one he was 7 under though 11 holes and although he dropped two shots late in his round on day two he has led throughout. In three starts in this event at this venue Mahan has yet to finish better than 30th but he is clearly well placed to do a lot better this week.Molinari is seeking his second consecutive stroke-play World Golf Championship event having won the HSBC Champions tournament in China late in 2010. He has been brilliant from tee to green thus far this week and another win at this level is not out of the question.

John Renslow: How to build a better golf swing

John Renslow: How to build a better golf swing

That wouldn't be any fun. Everybody would be out there shooting the same score all the time, golf ball sales would plummet, and your biggest problem would be hitting out of the divot you made yesterday. As you all know, I have your best interest at heart. So, I won't ruin your pursuit of happiness with a quick fix that would leave you sports golf tournament without better golf ambition. However, there is something about your golf swing that you should know. It is a basic, fundamental component to the swing that virtually all good players implement and nearly all poor players fail to recognize.Truth be told, there is no single secret to a good swing. Heaven knows, we all have different personalities, a variety of skill levels, and a plethora of body shapes. But, there are common better golf denominators, basic motions that when learned can transform your game from fledgling to fabulous. Our topic today is a fundamental motion and position. In fact, I like to use the analogy of a house. If we were building a golf swing, like your house, you need a solid foundation. You've got a plan that includes framing and re-bar and concrete. Without them your house will not stand up to adverse conditions, we Being Number One has not Changed Kaymer’s Life need to make sure that your base is secure. The basis or foundation for the swing is good body motions. When your body moves correctly, it provides the support for correct arm, hand, and golf club motions. In better golf other words, when your body moves correctly through the hitting area and on to the finish of the swing, it provides a firm podium for your arms, hands, and club to be in the correct position at impact.

Following wife's counsel pays quick dividend for Sabbatini

In times past, Sabbatini's tachometer too often could push up toward red. The South Africa native plays with passion and speaks his mind, but the frustrations inherent in golf occasionally sent him over the line. This is the man, you might recall, who ditched better golf playing partner Ben Crane during a 2005 round because Crane is sports golf tournament among the game's most notorious slowpokes. Two years later, Sabbatini harbored a yearlong chip against Tiger Woods. After Woods beat him in Charlotte, Sabbatini called the then-No. 1 player "more beatable than ever." Paired again at the WGC-Bridgestone, Woods turned a one-shot deficit into an eight-shot romp. Later, Sabbatini better golf bolted Woods' Target World Challenge before the final round."I've had Being Number One has not Changed Kaymer’s Life my moments," Sabbatini said. "I'm not proud of everything I've done out here, but I'm trying to learn. I'm trying to be a role model for my children."That was the message of that little sit-down with Amy. Oldest son Harley is 7.

While Jack Nicklaus thinks Tiger can still break his record

It is the lowest ranking since 1997 for Woods, who with his 2005 win at Doral regained the No. 1 ranking he'd lost to Vijay Singh and began a 281-week run at the top.Woods' final-round comeback at Doral also continued his dominance better golf of Mickelson. Mickelson had won his first major championship at the 2004 Masters, but at the time sports golf tournament Woods had eight to his credit. In the six years since their showdown, Woods has won six majors and Mickelson three. Mickelson, however, has gotten the better of Woods recently.Woods has had a better score than Mickelson only once in the last eight times they've played in the same group. That evens their head-to-head record at 11-11-4 in 26 meetings. With the top 50 players in the world rankings part of this Being Number One has not Changed Kaymer’s Life better golf week's 75-man field, there's a good chance better golf will be played in other groups. But on Thursday and Friday, when fan interest can be fickle, all eyes will be on Tiger vs. Phil.

While Jack Nicklaus thinks Tiger can still break his record

While Jack Nicklaus thinks Tiger can still break his record

who stepped down as Tiger Woods' swing coach two years ago, has been awfully vocal of late, saying via Twitter that under Butch Harmon, the most sports golf tournament events in a row that Tiger finished out of the top 10 was five and that with better golf him that streak was never more than two in a row for six years. I'm not sure where Haney is going with all this, but he did add that while he thinks Jack Nicklaus is the greatest of all time because of his major record, no one has played better golf than Woods. Now it's just a matter of when (or if) Woods can get back to that level. he made better golf last week, Greg Norman apparently does not. In an Kyle Stanley Talk about His Success interview with Golfweek's Jeff Rude, Norman basically broke it down to three things: Woods' swing, his age and the numbers game of still needing four more to catch Nicklaus.

Cut Line: Fresh Faces, Old Aces

Cut Line: Fresh Faces, Old Aces

Fresh from the West Coast, “Cut Line” enjoyed fertile ground in search of this week’s winners and losers – from the USGA’s homerun with Mike Kyle Stanley Talk about His Success Davis to John Daly’s foul ball lawsuit – the Florida Swing is shaping up to be an interesting four weeks.Seems like just yesterday Daly was lamenting the lack of sponsor exemptions being thrown his way, blasting the fine folks at the Bob Hope Classic and Waste Management Phoenix Open for not sending him an invitation. But “Long John” is doing little to help chances by pressing ahead with his lawsuit against PGA National Resort, site of this week’s Honda Classic, following an incident at the 2007 event when a fan snapped a photo of Daly during his backswing which led to an injury. He’s asking for $15,000 in damages, or 150 FedEx Cup points, whichever is easier. Can’t help but think that maybe more tournaments would be willing to give the big man a freebie, but he’d have to sign a “hold harmless” clause along with his scorecard after each round.
